Smart Address

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cleanse addresses other than for Romania?

SMARTaddress is designed specifically to cleanse and geocode Romanian addresses. It is based on a gazetteer of over 120,000 localities and streets and is specific to Romania.

What structure should I use for the data? Does it have to be in separate columns?

The data can be in virtually any format ranging from the complete address all in one column, to all address components in separate columns. However, if the input data is supplied in separate columns (e.g. street type, street name, numbers, locality, etc), then the processing will be quicker.

What format do I have to use to input the data? Does it have to be in separate columns?

The data can be in virtually any format ranging from the complete address all in one column, to all address components in separate columns. However, if the input data is supplied in separate columns (e.g. street type, street name, numbers, locality, etc), then the processing will be quicker.

How long does it take to process the data?

This depends on the complexity of the data and how 'dirty' it is ('dirty' refers to the use of abbreviations, mis-spellings, etc). As a guide, it can process between 500 and 2,000 records per minute depending on the database size. A good average is 1,500 records per minute for databases of 30,000 records or more.

What happens if we have new addresses (e.g. pre-1989 street names) in our database?

This is not a problem. SMARTaddress contains a list of name changes and new names will be replaced by the new names. This also applies to changes in diacritics e.g. Tincăbeşti would be replaced by Tâncăbeşti

How does SMARTaddress deal with diacritics?

At the output stage, the user has the option to have the data returned with or without diacritics: both are available.

Can I just obtain geographic coordinates (geocodes) for my existing database?

Absolutely, yes! You can access the system at three levels either separately or all together:
         Address cleansing and standardisation
         Adding postcodes (postcode attribution)
         Geocoding (supplying coordinates)

How do I get access to SMARTaddress so that I can cleanse and geocode my database?

The easiest way is to go to the Sign Up page and fill in the details. This will be transmitted to our data team who will then contact you to understand your requirement. At this stage, if you wish to proceed, a contract will be put in place and you will be allocated a Username and Password which will allow you to access the system.

How much does it cost?

This will be discussed once we have received your enquiry and had an opportunity to look at a sample of your database. The cost per record reduces according to the number of records you wish to process.

How many records can I process?

That is up to you. SMARTaddress has been tested on databases of up to 3,000,000 records. However, our experience – taking into account the time to process such a large database – is that users tend divide their databases into batches of up to 100,000 records.

Can I install SMARTaddress on my own computer?

SMARTaddress is delivered as Software as a Service (SaaS) based on the Cloud. It is accessible over the Internet and is not available as a stand-alone application.

What about security? Can my data be seen by others?

Security of your data is assured in three ways:
All data is transmitted via a Secure Socket Layer (SSL).
All data on the server is fully encrypted.
You will be provided with a dedicated area on the server and access is restricted to just the account hnewer.
Only users with an IP address which has been registered within SMARTaddress' security layer will be able to access the system.
This is called 'IP locking' and provides the ultimate in assurance.
